Matthew graduated with a BSc in Human Genetics (2007) and an MRes in Bioinformatics (2008) from Newcastle University. Moving to Trinity College Dublin to complete a PhD in Genetics (2013), where he specialised in the analysis of ancient DNA (aDNA). Matthew then conducted further postdoctoral research in archaeogenetics at Trinity College Dublin, the University of York and the University of Cambridge. In 2023 he moved back to Newcastle to join the Bioinformatics Support Unit .
